Title: Support to Vulnerable Women through Income Generation Projects
Implementing Organization: GDO
Partner: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
Location: Said Mahadi - Al-Jabaliyn
GDO, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), implemented an income generation initiative aimed at supporting 100 of the most vulnerable women within the target community. This intervention was designed to strengthen economic resilience, promote self-reliance, and improve the living conditions of women facing significant socio-economic challenges
The selection of beneficiaries was conducted through a transparent and community-based process, applying clear vulnerability criteria. Priority was given to female-headed households, widows, divorced women, women with disabilities, and those living in extreme poverty with multiple dependents. The process ensured that the support reached those most in need and aligned with principles of equity and inclusion.
Following the selection process, beneficiaries received tailored income generation start-up support based on their skills, experience, and local market opportunities. The supported activities included small retail businesses, tailoring, food processing, livestock rearing, and other viable micro-enterprises. In addition to the provision of start-up materials and equipment, beneficiaries were oriented on basic business management practices, including financial planning, savings, and sustainability strategies. Regular follow-up and monitoring visits were conducted to ensure the proper utilization of the provided support and to offer guidance where necessary.
The project has resulted in tangible improvements in the livelihoods of the supported women. Many beneficiaries have successfully established small businesses that contribute to household income, enabling them to better meet essential needs such as food, healthcare, and education. Beyond the economic benefits, the initiative has enhanced beneficiaries’ confidence, independence, and participation in community life. Women reported increased decision-making power within their households and greater optimism regarding their families’ future.
Despite positive outcomes, some challenges were observed, including limited capital to expand businesses and fluctuations in local market prices affecting profitability. These challenges highlight the need for continued mentorship, access to savings and loan mechanisms, and strengthened market linkages to ensure long-term sustainability.

Skills training to 100 youth on income generation, provide start-up kits and start-up capital to trainees
In April 2025, GDO successfully implemented a comprehensive skills training and income generation initiative targeting 100 youth in Sayed Mahdi area, Al Jabalain locality. The activity was designed to enhance economic opportunities for young people and equip them with practical, market-oriented vocational skills that enable them to establish sustainable livelihoods.
The program targeted an equal and inclusive group of beneficiaries, consisting of 49 young men and 51 young women. The selection process focused on unemployed and economically vulnerable youth who demonstrated interest and commitment to developing vocational skills and starting small businesses.
The training covered a range of professional and technical skills aligned with local market demands. Young men were primarily trained in vocational trades such as blacksmithing and car electrical maintenance, while young women received training in soap production, bakery and pastry making, and dough processing. The curriculum combined theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical sessions to ensure participants gained real-world experience and confidence in their respective trades.
Upon completion of the training, all participants received start-up kits tailored to their specific field of specialization. In addition, start-up capital was provided to enable trainees to launch their small businesses immediately after graduation. This integrated approach—combining skills development with material and financial support—ensured that the training translated into tangible economic opportunities rather than remaining purely theoretical.

Support to vegetable production - Procure and distribute assorted vegetable seeds, tools, fertilizers to 150 beneficiaries households
GDO, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), successfully implemented a comprehensive training program on Modern Farming Techniques targeting 150 households. The initiative brought together 150 participants, including 85 men and 65 women, with the aim of strengthening agricultural productivity, improving food security, and enhancing sustainable livelihoods within the community.
The training focused on practical, climate-smart, and market-oriented farming approaches. Participants gained knowledge on land preparation, proper seed selection, planting methods, irrigation practices, and timing of cultivation to maximize yields. The sessions combined technical guidance with hands-on learning, ensuring that farmers were equipped not only with information but also with the confidence to apply new techniques effectively.
Following the completion of the training, the project moved into the implementation phase. Vegetable seeds were distributed to all participating farmers, carefully selected to match the local soil conditions and seasonal calendar. This was followed by organized land preparation to ensure that farms were ready for cultivation under optimal conditions.
The farming phase was successfully carried out, demonstrating clear and tangible results. The careful selection of appropriate seeds, the suitability of the farming location, and adherence to the correct planting season all contributed to a productive cultivation cycle. The positive outcomes reflected the direct impact of the training, confirming that the knowledge and skills transferred during the sessions were effectively applied in practice.
This initiative highlights the importance of integrating capacity building with practical support. By combining technical training, input distribution, and structured follow-up, GDO and UNDP reinforced community resilience and strengthened the foundations for sustainable agricultural development.
